Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays are days of shadowing at the hospital. Wednesdays are days of excursions. Tuesday, May 22nd, was the first day in the hospital and I got the wonderful opportunity to shadow a gynecologist named Ana. We had conversations in English and some in Spanish. She showed me around the maternity hospital and introduced me to the other doctors that worked in the same department as her (she made sure she let them know I was American). Once her patients showed up, we both entered the room and she began the process of the exam by looking at the babies. Checking their heat beat, and making sure everything was okay and working accordingly. The first day of shadowing was not that intense. The shadowing primarily focused on after birth, but Ana ensured me the next time would be much more informative and involved.
Wednesday May 23rd the Atlantis Project site managers took all the fellows on a excursion hike to see a wonderful view of Zaragoza. We also went site seeing to experience the beautiful culture of Zaragoza.
Week one was an overall success and I cannot wait to do more shadowing and learn more about Zaragoza.
I am a senior, Biology major, at Bennett College. Summer 2017 I am participating in the Atlantis Project Fellowship. The Atlantis Project Fellowship is a 3 to 8 week pre-medical international fellowship program for students who plan to apply and complete medical school. This program allows students to spend 20+ hours per week shadowing doctors in multiple specialties in hospitals abroad in Europe and south America. I chose to study in Spain
